CONTEXT
We had the distinct pleasure of collaborating with the Museum of Art and Design in Benešov on the graphic design for the exhibition „Obraz, záznam, technika?“ (Image, Record, Technique?). The exhibition is rooted in the museum’s photography collection and its rich history. The challenge was to break away from standard, passive exhibition formats where visitors just watch and read, being instructed on what to think or feel. Our goal was to design an engaging visual language that transforms viewing into experiencing.
APPROACH
The identity design intentionally breaks the mold of passive observation. Instead of dictating a specific narrative, the concept revolves around the idea of a „game.“ We invite visitors to actively explore, question, and establish a personal connection to photography. This connection is sparked by a series of open questions, devoid of clear instructions. Examples include provocative questions like: How does a photograph smell? Can we stop time? The typography and layout serve as catalysts for this internal and physical exploration, creating a structured yet open-ended space for interpretation.
OUTCOME
The resulting graphic system is highly effective in activating the audience. It shifts the exhibition from a purely passive viewing of a collection to a dynamic environment of self-reflection. The design creates intuitive yet non-prescriptive pathways for interaction, ensuring that the legacy of Benešov's photography collection is experienced as a relevant and immediate part of the viewer’s personal landscape. The approach defines the museum as an imaginative, open institution that empowers its visitors.
